JHS2 Arabic · Term 3, Week 2

Critical Reading

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.3.4.1.3 - Demonstrate analytical skill in identifying patterns in a given text.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify repeated words, phrases, or sentence structures in a given Arabic text and state what pattern they form.
  2. Classify words and phrases in a text according to whether they serve persuasion (appeal to emotion, reason, or authority) or exposition (definition, explanation, description, narration, elaboration, argumentation, evaluation).
  3. Explain in simple Arabic or English why an author repeats certain words or structures to achieve a specific purpose.
  4. Sort phrases from a sample text into a simple two-column table (persuasion versus exposition) with at least 80% accuracy.
  5. State a short conclusion about the writer’s intention based on the patterns identified in the text.

This lesson builds on Week 1 (pulling information from different segments of a text, B8.3.4.1.1) and Week 2 (eliciting information and extracting lessons, B8.3.4.1.2). Learners already know how to locate information; now they will learn to notice how that information is arranged through patterns. Interpretation of those patterns, which belongs to B8.3.4.1.4, is only introduced briefly and will be developed fully in Week 3.
