Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.1.6.3.1 - Engage in collaborative conversation with unfamiliar audience. Sample topics: social issues, social values and manners.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain what makes a conversation collaborative, including taking turns, maintaining eye contact, and using appropriate facial expressions.
  2. Engage in a conversation with an unfamiliar audience (such as learners from another class or a visiting guest) on a social issue, social value, or manner.
  3. Contribute at least three relevant ideas or opinions to a group conversation while respecting the contributions of others.
  4. Use polite conversational phrases such as “I agree with you, but…” or “In my opinion…” to express thoughts during a conversation.
  5. Apply agreed-upon conversation rules when speaking with people they do not know well.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Show a video of a talk show or introduce a talk show by drawing on learners' background knowledge of such activities on TV.
- Identify an interesting topic e.g. "Children should not do WhatsApp". Initiate a conversation using questions. Learners take turns to contribute to the conversation.
- Put learners in groups and let them choose topics for conversation. Go round to ensure learners take turns, use facial expressions appropriately and maintain eye contact when in conversation.
