Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.1.6.3.2

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and state at least four agreed-upon rules for conversation, such as waiting for a speaker to finish, making eye contact, and staying on topic.
  2. Demonstrate turn taking by taking part in a paired conversation on a current or recent event, with each partner speaking at least twice.
  3. Express thoughts coherently by connecting at least three sentences on a single topic in a logical order during a short conversation.
  4. Follow agreed-upon conversation rules while listening to a partner, showing attention through nods, eye contact, and relevant responses.
  5. Apply appropriate vocabulary during conversation by choosing words that fit the topic, with support from vocabulary cards when needed.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Through discussion, guide learners to identify some current or recent events.
- Choose one such event and engage in a model conversation with a learner earlier prepared.
- Converse on a given topic with a learner as others watch.
- Let learners, converse in pairs on different topics after the example. Encourage them to follow the rules of conversation.
Guide the use of appropriate vocabulary by showing vocabulary cards and indirectly dropping hints of a correct word.
