Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.1.1.1.1 - Use appropriate register in everyday communication (informal and formal) with diverse partners on grade-level topics/texts/issues
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Distinguish between formal and informal register and identify at least three features of each.
- Identify slang words and jargon used locally (e.g., “chale,” “buka,” “abeg”) and internationally (e.g., “lit,” “GOAT,” “FOMO”) and explain when each is appropriate.
- Convert informal statements into formal ones and vice versa on grade-level topics such as music, sports, social media, and causes of poor academic performance.
- Create and act out short dialogues using both formal and informal register to show how characters differ, in pairs or small groups.
- Use appropriate register in spontaneous conversation, choosing formal or informal language to match the audience and situation.
