Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.1.1.1.3 - Use appropriate language and open-ended questions to discuss grade-level national and global issues
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three national issues (such as youth in agriculture, sanitation, or lifestyle diseases) and three global issues (such as gender inclusion, child trafficking, or terrorism) that are relevant to their level.
- Formulate open-ended questions (questions that begin with what, why, how, and in what ways) to probe the views of other speakers during a discussion.
- Use appropriate formal register, including issue-specific vocabulary, phrasal verbs, and at least one idiom, when discussing national and global issues.
- Participate in a small-group discussion on a given national or global issue, contributing at least two substantive comments and asking at least one open-ended question that links to another speaker’s idea.
- Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate language for discussing serious issues, giving reasons for their choices.
