Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.1.1.1.4 - Demonstrate appropriate turn taking and use techniques for effective argument (debating)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State at least three rules of turn taking in a debate and explain why each rule matters for fairness and order.
  2. Identify and use at least two techniques for effective argument, such as using evidence, addressing the opposing view, or using persuasive language, in a spoken argument.
  3. Take turns appropriately in a mini-debate by speaking only when recognised by the chairperson, listening actively, and not interrupting others.
  4. Use formal register (respectful, clear, structured language) when presenting a point for or against a motion.
  5. Evaluate a short debate segment by commenting on whether speakers followed turn-taking rules and used effective argument techniques.
