Conversation/everyday Discourse
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.1.1.1.2 - Ask and respond to specific questions with elaboration by making comments that contribute to texts, issues or topics under discussion
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Ask open-ended questions (beginning with “why is it…”, “how can…”, “what would…”) that invite detailed responses on a given topic.
- Respond to open-ended questions with elaborated answers that include reasons, examples, or personal opinions.
- Make follow-up comments that build on, clarify or extend what a speaker has said during a discussion.
- Distinguish between closed questions (yes/no answers) and open-ended questions that encourage elaboration.
- Participate in a small-group conversation on a given topic, contributing at least two elaborated comments while showing respect for other speakers.
This lesson builds on the previous slot (B8.1.1.1.1) where learners practised using appropriate register in everyday communication. It opens the development of elaborated questioning and commenting skills, which will be extended in later lessons on describing places and events, and on turn-taking.
