Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.1.1.1.3 - Use appropriate language orally to describe familiar places and events

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify descriptive language (adjectives, sense words, adverbs, similes and metaphors) in a spoken description of a familiar place or event.
  2. Use at least five descriptive words or phrases that appeal to different senses when describing a familiar place.
  3. Give a clear two-minute oral description of a familiar event, such as a festival durbar or a local market day, using correct descriptive language.
  4. Use figurative language, such as a simile or metaphor, appropriately when describing a place or event.
  5. Listen to a peer’s description and identify at least three descriptive words or phrases they used.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Identify descriptive language e.g. adjectives and words that appeal to the senses (foggy, creepy, tingling, piercing, tantalising, stale, bumpy, staggering), figurative language (simile, metaphor, etc.) and adverbs.
- Describe familiar places and events e.g. a tourist site, a durbar of a festival.
