Learning Objectives

Indicator: B2.1.6.2.1 - Demonstrate turn-taking in conversations

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify when it is their turn to speak in a group conversation (after the last speaker stops, or when invited by the group leader).
  2. Take turns correctly in a Community Circle activity, sharing about a weekend event or personal experience.
  3. Name at least two rules of turn-taking and explain why each rule matters in a conversation.
  4. Use a simple sentence frame to signal readiness to speak or to invite another learner to speak.
  5. Recognise and avoid interrupting others when they are speaking during a group discussion.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Use the Community Circle Activity: Sit learners in horse-shoe formation.
- Call individual learners to talk about what happened over the weekend. e. g. events, personal experiences, incidents, etc.
- Let learners take turns to name and describe events of recent occurrence.
- Discuss the importance of turn-taking in conversation: e.g. i. They talk after the last speaker has stopped.
They talk when invited e.g. by the group leader.
