Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.3 - Discuss the role of the Judiciary in a democratic state.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define the Judiciary and state its composition under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
  2. Explain at least four functions of the Judiciary in a democratic state, including the protection of fundamental human rights.
  3. Analyse why the justice delivery system is often slow and assess whether this slowness supports or undermines democracy.
  4. Discuss the civic values of justice, fairness, honesty, and integrity as they apply to the work of judges and magistrates.
  5. Identify practical ways citizens can access legal services in Ghana, including legal aid and the courts.

Talk for Learning: Pair two learners to discuss and present the functions of the Judiciary in the preservation of fundamental human rights. Pay particular attention to civic values of justice, fairness, honesty, and integrity. Emphasis should be placed on the rationale for slowness in the justice delivery system; deal with issues of mistrust and misconceptions of the judiciary system. Point out how citizens can access legal services.
