Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.2.1.LI.5 - Explain the meaning and structure of the Judiciary.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define the Judiciary and explain its role as the third organ of government, building on their prior knowledge of the Executive and Legislature from Weeks 16 and 17.
- Describe the hierarchical structure of the Judiciary in Ghana, from the Supreme Court down to the lower courts, as established under the 1992 Constitution.
- Explain the functions and jurisdiction of each level of the court structure in Ghana.
- Analyse the importance of an independent Judiciary in safeguarding justice, fairness and the rule of law in a democratic society.
- Justify the role of women in justice delivery in Ghana and propose ways to enhance their participation, demonstrating the civic values of justice, fairness, honesty and integrity.
