Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.2.3.2.3 - Distinguish different ways musical works of African art composers reflect the history, culture, environment and topical issues

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Distinguish at least three different ways that African art music composers such as J. H. K. Nketia and Akin Euba reflect history, culture, environment and topical issues in their works.
  2. Compare and contrast the musical approaches of J. H. K. Nketia and Akin Euba, citing specific examples of how each composer draws on his cultural background.
  3. Analyse the lyrics of one popular African song that addresses an emerging topical issue and explain how the composer uses music to promote awareness.
  4. Compose short original lyrics (at least four lines) on a topical issue such as sanitation, climate change or social security, set to a familiar tune, demonstrating how music can sensitise the public.
  5. Reflect on how their own musical composition connects to the broader African tradition of using music as a vehicle for social commentary and cultural expression.
