Connections in Local and Global Cultures

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.2.3.2.5 - Appreciate and appraise at least three (3) indigenous and neo-traditional groups within the nation based on their style, instruments, song themes, dance movements, etc

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Describe the style, instruments, song themes and dance movements of at least three indigenous and neo-traditional music groups in Ghana.
  2. Compare and contrast two indigenous groups and two neo-traditional groups using a set of appraisal criteria.
  3. Justify the cultural value of at least one indigenous or neo-traditional group using appropriate musical vocabulary.
  4. Present a short oral appraisal of a selected group, using correct sentence structure and musical terminology.

This lesson builds directly on Week 8, where learners distinguished how Ghanaian art composers reflect history, culture and topical issues in their works. In Week 10, learners will move on to dance and drama artistes, so this week focuses purely on music groups.
