Concept Sketches
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.1 - Analyse various basic shapes and rendering techniques used to create complex forms in freehand drawing.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify and name at least six basic shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle, oval, and cylinder) found in complex objects in their environment.
- Describe at least four rendering techniques (hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and blending or shading with pencil) used to give form and depth to freehand drawings.
- Analyse a given object or photograph and explain how its complex form is built from a combination of basic shapes.
- Apply at least two rendering techniques to a freehand sketch of a complex object to show light, shade, and texture.
- Work in mixed-gender groups to discuss and present findings on how basic shapes and rendering techniques combine to create complex forms.

Group Work/Collaborative Learning: Learners in groups discuss the characteristics of basic shapes and rendering techniques used to create complex forms with the aid of relevant resources such as photographs, drawings, videos, charts and actual objects in the environment. Problem-based Learning/Experiential Learning: Learners in groups observe how basic shapes and rendering techniques have been used to create complex forms with the aid of relevant resources such as photographs, drawings, videos, charts and actual objects in the environment. Project-based Learning/Experiential Learning: Let learners in groups generate manual/digital pictorial charts of basic shapes and rendering techniques that can be used to create complex forms. Assessment (2.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Models - Charts - reference books - drawing studio - access to internet - LCD Projector - sketches. - Pencils - Sketch pads - Erasers - Pencil sharpener - Drawing pens or ink - Blending stumps - Charcoal
