SHS2 Ict · Semester 2, Week 15

Computer and Information Security

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.2 - Discuss and implement preventive mechanisms to mitigate computer network attacks (e.g., antivirus software, hardware and software, and firewalls).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define antivirus software, hardware firewalls, and software firewalls in their own words and state the function of each.
  2. Explain at least three ways that antivirus software protects a computer from malware, including how it detects and removes threats.
  3. Distinguish between hardware and software firewalls, describing one advantage and one limitation of each.
  4. Demonstrate the steps for installing or enabling a firewall and scheduling a virus scan on a computer or mobile device.
  5. Evaluate the effectiveness of different preventive mechanisms in given attack scenarios and recommend an appropriate combination of controls.
