Indicator: B9.2.1.2.7 - Interpret use of words/phrases (figurative, symbolic, sensory) in complex texts

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify words and phrases in a complex text that appeal to the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch).
  2. Explain the meaning of common figurative expressions (simile, metaphor, personification) used in a given passage.
  3. Identify symbols in a text and state what they represent within the context of the passage.
  4. Interpret how a writer’s choice of sensory, figurative, or symbolic language shapes the reader’s understanding of characters and events.
  5. Respond to inferential questions about the author’s use of language in a short passage.
