Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.2.1.2.2 - Use contextual clues (topic sentence, vocabulary knowledge, cohesive devices, text features) to analyse text
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define the four types of contextual clues (topic sentence, vocabulary knowledge, cohesive devices, and text features) and give one example of each.
- Identify the topic sentence in a given paragraph and explain how it points to the main idea of the whole text.
- Use vocabulary knowledge, such as synonyms, antonyms, definitions and examples found in a text, to work out the meaning of unfamiliar words.
- Recognise cohesive devices (linking words such as “however”, “therefore”, “in addition”, “for example”) and explain how they connect ideas within and across paragraphs.
- Use text features such as headings, sub-headings, pictures and captions to predict and analyse the content of an unseen passage.
