Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.2.1.2.1 - Identify the main text features of non-fiction texts
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least five common text features found in non-fiction texts (headings, subheadings, captions, diagrams, bold print, glossary, index, table of contents).
- Explain the purpose of each identified text feature and how it helps a reader understand the text.
- Locate and label text features in a given non-fiction passage about a familiar topic.
- Make connections between text features and their prior knowledge to predict what a text will be about.
- Answer comprehension questions by referring to specific text features as evidence for their answers.
This lesson builds on the monitoring, visualisation, prediction, and questioning skills learners practised in Weeks 8 and 9. It focuses on identifying the physical features of non-fiction texts before the deeper analysis of topic sentences and cohesive devices that will come in Week 11.
