Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.2.1.1.2 - Use prediction to assess and improve engagement and understanding of non-fiction texts
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Make reasoned predictions about the content, purpose and structure of a non-fiction text before reading it, using the title, headings, images and their prior knowledge.
- Connect their own experiences and knowledge to the topic of a non-fiction text to form and refine predictions.
- Read a non-fiction text in short chunks, pausing to confirm, adjust or reject their predictions based on evidence in the text.
- Restate the main idea and key details of a short non-fiction text after reading, and explain how prediction helped them understand it better.
- Generate two or three thought-provoking questions arising from their predictions and from gaps in their understanding of the text.
