JHS3 Career Technology · Term 2, Week 10

Communicating Designs

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.5.1.1.2 - Develop surfaces of pyramids using instruments

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and name the parts of a square pyramid needed for surface development (base, triangular faces, true shape, fold lines).
  2. Draw the complete surface development of a square pyramid to given dimensions using drawing instruments.
  3. Cut out a developed surface pattern, leaving flaps for joining, and fold it into a finished pyramid model.
  4. Evaluate their own finished model against a checklist of criteria (accuracy of measurements, neatness of folds, secure joints).

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

1. Illustrate the techniques of developing prisms and pyramids using instruments
E.g., Draw the front view and plan, and then project them to draw the surface development of the prism and pyramids.
2. Develop surfaces of simple objects (cylinder, cone, square prism, square pyramid) to required dimensions.
3. Cut out the shapes of developed surfaces leaving flaps for joining.
4. Fold and join the cut-outs as expected to obtain the objects
E.g., milk tin, milo tin, match box, sugar box, pizza box, funnel, Christmas hat.
5. Plan and mount an exhibition of the objects for appraisal.
