Learning Objectives
Indicator: B7.6.2.1.1 - Use historical sources to examine the colonial period in Ghana (1874-1957).
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the four main territorial divisions of colonial Ghana (Gold Coast Colony, Asante, Northern Territories, and Trans-Volta Togoland) using historical maps.
- Construct a chronological timeline showing the key events that led to the establishment of British colonial rule in Ghana from 1874 to 1957.
- Explain the major events leading to the annexation of Asante and the Northern Territories by the British.
- Analyse how Trans-Volta Togoland came under British rule through the mandate and trusteeship systems.
- Discuss the significance of the 1956 Plebiscite and its connection to Ghana’s independence in 1957.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
1. Using historical maps of Ghana, learners identify areas constituting the Gold Coast Colony, Asante, Northern Territories and the Trans-Volta Togoland. 2. In small groups, learners create a chronological timeline to explain the processes leading to establishing British colonial rule in Ghana, including the proclamation of the Gold Coast as a Crown Colony. 3. In a jigsaw activity, learners discuss major events leading to the annexation of Asante and the Northern Territories. 4. Using document analysis, learners analyse how the Trans- Volta Togoland was adopted under British rule. 5. Learners re-enact the Plebiscite of 1956 and discuss its relevance to Ghana's Independence in 1957.
