SHS2 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 1, Week 5

Classification of Materials

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.1 - Identify types of materials processing methods.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Define materials processing and state why raw materials must be processed before use.
  • Identify at least three types of materials processing methods from video clips and community examples.
  • Sort given processing activities into shaping processes, property-enhancing processes and surface processing operations.
  • Give one local example of each processing category from industries or trades in their own community.
  • Present group findings on processing methods clearly, respecting diverse views and contributions from all members.

This lesson builds on the chemical properties (Week 2) and structure (Week 3) of materials. The focus here is on the methods used to process materials, not on classifying materials by processing method (Week 6) or by synthesis (Week 7).

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning: Show learners videos of material processing methods.
Collaborative Learning: Let learners in mixed-ability groups identify, from the video, the types of materials processing methods such as shaping processes, property-enhancing processes and surface processing operations.
Experiential Learning: Lead learners to classify material processing methods available in their communities into shaping processes, property-enhancing processes and surface processing operations.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Audio-visuals * Textbooks
- * Educational tour to a material processing company * ICT facilities
Assessment (2.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall.
