SHS3 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 17
Circuits and Machines
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.3 - Operate (connect, control, and disconnect) electrical machines.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Connect electrical machines to a power source following the correct sequence of steps for at least three different machine types (AC motor, DC motor, and transformer).
- Control the operation of electrical machines by varying speed, power output, or torque where applicable, and observing the resulting changes.
- Disconnect electrical machines safely using the correct shutdown procedure, including stopping the machine before isolating the power supply.
- Demonstrate the complete operate, control, disconnect cycle for one electrical machine without prompting, while explaining each step to a partner.

Experiential Learning: Learners are assisted to turn on the electrical machines, vary their speed, power output, torque, etc., as applicable, and finally turn them off. Furthermore, learners watch videos on how to operate the various machines. Assessment (3.2.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Videos on the applications of electrical machines - Projector - Laptop - Transformers - AC and DC generators - AC and DC motors - special electrical machines, including stepper and servo motor - Videos on the applications of electrical machines - Videos on safety measures in the use of electrical machines.
