Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.2.1.LI.2 - Classify circuit elements into passive and active elements.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define passive and active circuit elements in their own words, distinguishing between elements that can supply energy and those that can only absorb or store it.
  2. Classify common circuit elements (resistors, capacitors, inductors, switches, batteries, generators, transistors, diodes) as either passive or active, giving a reason for each classification.
  3. Explain the key differences between passive and active elements in terms of energy behaviour, voltage-current relationship and need for an external power source.
  4. Construct a concept map that organises circuit elements into passive and active categories, using the correct circuit symbols from the previous week’s lesson.
  5. Justify the classification of a given circuit element in a mixed-ability group discussion, defending their reasoning with reference to how the element behaves in a circuit.

In small mixed-ability groups, learners classify the circuit elements as passive and active and share their reports with the whole class.
