Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.1 - Describe qualitative and elemental analysis of organic compounds.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Distinguish between qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of organic compounds, giving at least one example of each.
- Describe the key steps involved in the purification of an impure organic compound using recrystallization, drying and distillation.
- Explain how melting point and boiling point determinations are used to assess the purity of an organic compound.
- Perform a simple paper chromatography analysis and calculate Rf values from a chromatogram.
- Interpret a paper chromatogram to identify the components present in a mixture, such as a plant pigment extract.
