SHS2 Biomedical Science · Semester 1, Week 7

Biosafety

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.3, Demonstrate proper methods for donning and removal of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, lab coats, eye protection and respiratory protection.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify each type of PPE (gloves, lab coat, eye protection, respiratory protection) and state its purpose in preventing biohazard exposure.
  2. Demonstrate the correct sequence for donning (putting on) PPE without contaminating themselves or the equipment.
  3. Demonstrate the correct sequence for removing PPE without cross-contaminating their skin, clothing, or the surrounding environment.
  4. Explain why the order of PPE removal is critical for preventing biohazard exposure, using examples of common contamination mistakes.
  5. Assess their own and a partner’s donning and removal technique, identifying at least one error and correcting it, building on the biosafety level concepts from Week 5 and the cabinet setup from Week 6.

Demonstrative Learning: Learners fully wear their PPEs (lab coat, face masks, gloves, face shields, close-toed shoes, etc.) and cover them with Glo Germ or other dyes. Afterwards, let learners remove the PPEs and check for the dye contamination. Demonstrate proper procedures for removing PPEs so that there is no cross-contamination.
