SHS1 Biomedical Science · Semester 1, Week 8
Biosafety
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.3 - Analyse laboratory-acquired infections (LAIs), including some case studies.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define laboratory-acquired infection (LAI) and list at least three common ways LAIs occur in laboratories.
- Explain how the routes of exposure studied in Week 7 (inhalation, ingestion, inoculation, and skin contact) contribute to laboratory-acquired infections.
- Analyse at least two real cases of LAIs, identifying the unsafe practice, the route of exposure, and the preventive measure that could have stopped the infection.
- Categorise given laboratory scenarios as safe or unsafe practices and justify their reasoning using knowledge of biosafety.
- Recommend appropriate biosafety practices to prevent LAIs in a school or hospital laboratory setting.

Initiating Talk for Learning: Watch videos on a case study of LAI (e.g., "Outbreak") or listen to summarised conversations on LAI and write down at least three items or practices observed that may have been inaccurate or are interesting representations of safety in the laboratory. Exploratory Learning: Engage on a field trip to a laboratory for a talk on LAIs or invite a resource person to the class. Collaborative Learning: Through think-pair-share, write down examples, sources and prevention of LAIs Teaching and Learning Resources: - Flashcards - Pictures - Glo germ/dye/coloured Sticky Notes/Flip charts - Standards and regulatory documents - powder - Chart - Picture Video - Chart - Computer Assessment (1.1.2.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
