Learning Objectives

Indicator: B4.4.1.2.1 - Identify the characteristics of a responsible citizen

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define in their own words what an active citizen and a passive citizen are, and give at least one example of each type from their community.
  2. Identify and list at least five characteristics of a responsible citizen, such as obedience to rules, honesty, hard work, respect, and patriotism.
  3. Sort given behaviours into those of a responsible citizen and those of an irresponsible citizen, explaining their reasoning.
  4. React to a case study involving a lost item and state the responsible action to take, linking their response to the characteristics learned.
  5. Work in pairs and groups to discuss and present examples of responsible citizenship from their own school or community.

Discuss with learners the types of citizens e.g.
i. Active citizen
An active citizen is an individual who contributes to the well-being of his or her community.
ii. Passive citizen
A passive citizen is an individual who does not contribute to the well-being of his or her community.
Learners through think-pair-share to talk about the characteristics of a responsible citizen, e.g.
i. obey rules and regulations
ii. diligence
iii. patriotism
iv. honesty
v. respect
vi. hard work
vii. commitment
viii. listening/tolerance to other view points
Learners, in groups, identify the characteristics of a good citizen.
Case study
Teacher uses case study approach to raise a variety of issues, e.g. A pupil finds money in the classroom and keeps it instead of finding the owner. Pupils to react and state their views on this issue.
