Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.4 - Examine how citizens’ rights are protected.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least four mechanisms through which citizens’ rights are protected in Ghana, including the 1992 Constitution, the courts, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), and civil society organisations.
  2. Explain how each of these mechanisms operates to safeguard the rights of citizens, giving one specific example for each.
  3. Analyse a scenario in which a citizen’s right is threatened and evaluate which protection mechanism would be most appropriate to apply.
  4. Assess the special attention given to the protection of minority rights in Ghana and justify why such protection matters in a democracy.
  5. Demonstrate awareness of their own role in protecting their rights and the rights of others through responsible citizenship.

Talk for learning: Discuss how citizens' rights can be protected in a state. Probe for further responses. Attention must be given to all learners and values such as patriotism, responsibility, equality, equity, and confidence. Special emphasis should be placed on the rights of the minority and how it can be assessed.
