Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.3 - State principle of flotation.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State the principle of flotation in their own words, correctly relating the weight of a floating body to the weight of the fluid it displaces.
- Compare the weights of floating and non-floating objects against the weights of the fluids they displace, using results from simple experiments.
- Explain, using the principle of flotation, why some objects float in a given fluid while others sink.
- Apply the principle of flotation to predict whether an object will float or sink when given its weight and the weight of fluid it can displace.
- Demonstrate teamwork and responsible conduct while carrying out group investigations on floating and sinking.

Collaborative Learning: Following from the activities in Archimedes' principle, let learners compare the weights of substances to their respective fluids they displace for both floating objects and non-floating objects and let learners draw conclusions from that. Grouping must cater for vulnerable groups of learners. Opportunity for all to participate. Assessment (2.1.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
