Indicator: B5.4.2.2.1 - Explain and appreciate the importance of democratic governance
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define democratic governance in simple terms and name at least three persons or bodies responsible for governing their school.
- Explain at least two reasons why democratic governance is important in their school and for national development.
- Demonstrate the process of electing a leader democratically through a class mock election.
- Suggest at least one practical way school governance could be improved.
- Show respect for the views and choices of others during the election process and class discussions.

Learners identify various persons and bodies who are responsible in governing their school e.g. headteacher, teachers, school prefects. Learners discuss the importance of good governance in their school. Learners in groups suggest ways in which school governance could be improved. Groups present their report in class. Class mock election Learners demonstrate how to elect a leader in a democratic way. Learners discuss why good governance is important for national development.
