Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.1.LI.3 - Analyse and explain the impacts of contemporary African art in the Artworld.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three major ways contemporary African art has influenced global art institutions, such as museums, galleries, and biennales.
  2. Explain how African artists like Ibrahim Mahama, El Anatsui, and Yinka Shonibare have shaped international perceptions of African art through their materials, themes, and exhibition strategies.
  3. Analyse the role of African biennales and triennales (for example, the Dak’Art Biennale in Senegal and the Ghana Freedom Biennale) in promoting African socio-cultural identity globally.
  4. Evaluate the economic, cultural, and educational impacts of contemporary African art on the global Artworld using specific examples discussed in class.
  5. Justify their own position on whether contemporary African art has achieved equal standing in the global Artworld, using evidence from the artists and exhibitions studied.

Problem-based Learning/Group Work
- Through group discussion, investigate the concepts, that support the making of the artworks of selected African contemporary artists and deduce the impact of contemporary African art in the Artworld.
- Examples of artists: Aina Onabolu, Ibrahim Mahama, El Anastui, Nnenna Okore, Yinka Shonibare, Paju Alatise, Dorothy Amenuke, Theresa Ankomah, William Kentridge, Penny Siopis etc. Consider GATE and learners with language barriers like especially English as first language. Cater for learners with speech and hearing needs, as well as gender sensitive language for equity of access.
