Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.1.LI.2 - Evaluate and explain the contributions of contemporary Ghanaian Art and artists to the Ghanaian Art scene.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Name at least four contemporary Ghanaian artists who have worked between 2001 and the present and identify one major work and material associated with each.
  2. Explain in their own words at least three distinct contributions contemporary Ghanaian artists have made to the development of the Ghanaian art scene.
  3. Evaluate the significance of a specific contemporary Ghanaian artist’s work and exhibition strategy using a simple criteria checklist (materials, themes, audience reach, impact).
  4. Discuss in groups how contemporary Ghanaian artists have influenced the recognition of Ghanaian art locally and internationally, and present their findings to the class.
  5. Reflect on their personal connection to contemporary Ghanaian art and identify one way they might contribute to the Ghanaian art scene in the future.

Collaboration/Group Work:In groups, examine the artworks and exhibition strategies of specific contemporary Ghanaian artists and their artworks by watching videos and photos, and reading magazines, art journals, etc.
Experiential learning: Take a trip to the studio/ watch videos or photographs of specific contemporary Ghanaian artists to document their artworks and exhibition strategies.
Problem-based/Collaborative Learning:
- In groups, initiate a discussion to deduce the contributions of contemporary Ghanaian Art and artists to the Ghanaian art scene.
