Learning Objectives
Indicator: B3.3.1.1.1 - Describe how the Europeans settled on the Gold Coast, including forming alliances with the local chiefs
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the Portuguese as the first Europeans to arrive on the Gold Coast and state when they arrived (1471).
- Locate the first settlements of the Europeans on the Gold Coast, including Elmina and other coastal areas.
- Describe how the Europeans formed alliances with local chiefs through agreements, gifts and marriage.
- Dramatise the meeting between the Portuguese and Kwamina Ansah, showing how the friendship began.
- Explain why other Europeans, such as the Dutch, English and Danes, later came to settle on the Gold Coast.
