Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.4.13.1.1 - Write explanations and examples to support opinions

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State and explain their opinion on a given motion clearly in one or two sentences.
  2. Give at least two reasons that explain why they hold their opinion.
  3. Support each reason with a concrete example that makes the explanation clearer.
  4. Write a short paragraph (4 to 6 sentences) that presents an opinion, explains it, and gives examples to back it up.
  5. Read their written opinion aloud to a group and respond respectfully to classmates’ questions about their examples.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Present a motion to learners. E. g. A lawyer is more important than a doctor.
- Discuss the meaning and implication of the motion with pupils and invite them to take a stand either for or against the motion.
- Put learners into two groups: for the motion and against the motion and write down what they think about it.
Groups read out their opinions to the class for discussions.
