SHS3 Physics · Semester 2, Week 14

Applications of Electronics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.4.LI.1 - Design a PNP amplifier.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Identify the three terminals of a PNP transistor (emitter, base, collector) and state the polarity of voltages required to forward-bias and reverse-bias its junctions.
  • Explain how a small base current controls a larger collector current in a PNP transistor, using the concepts of holes and conventional current direction.
  • Draw and label a complete circuit diagram of a PNP common-emitter amplifier, showing the input, output, coupling capacitors, bias resistors, and DC supply connections.
  • Calculate the voltage gain of a PNP amplifier circuit given the input and output voltage values.
  • Construct and test a PNP amplifier circuit (on breadboard or simulation) and measure its output, comparing it with the input signal.
