Applications of Electronics
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.3.4.LI.2 - Design a NPN amplifier.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the three terminals of an NPN transistor and state their functions in a common-emitter amplifier circuit.
- Compare and contrast input and output signal waveforms in terms of amplitude, using a simulation or oscilloscope display.
- Calculate the voltage gain of an NPN amplifier given input and output voltage values (Gain = Vout / Vin).
- Construct a working NPN amplifier circuit on a breadboard or in simulation software, correctly biasing the base with a voltage divider network.
- Justify the choice of component values (RC, RE, R1, R2) for a given supply voltage and desired gain.

Collaborative learning: Using simulations and multimedia, let learners watch a video/simulation of how an NPN amplifier is built. Provide equitable access to resources and opportunities. Assessment (3.3.4.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Audio-visuals - Internet - Projectors - YouTube - Reference books - Flash cards - Field trips or visits
