SHS1 Physics · Semester 2, Week 12

Analogue Electronics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.3.LI.3 - Analyse the benefits of using LEDs and the I-V characteristics of Zener diodes and applications.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain at least four benefits of using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) over traditional incandescent bulbs, with reference to efficiency, lifespan, size and switching speed.
  2. Describe how the I-V characteristic curve of a Zener diode differs from that of an ordinary PN junction diode, particularly in the reverse breakdown region.
  3. Identify the Zener breakdown (knee) voltage from a given I-V characteristic graph and explain its significance in voltage regulation.
  4. Analyse simple circuits that use a Zener diode to regulate voltage and an LED to indicate circuit status.
  5. Justify the choice of an LED or a Zener diode for a given practical application in everyday devices.
