SHS2 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 2, Week 2

Aircraft Instrumentation

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.2 - Indicate the various aircraft parameters that are recorded.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. List at least eight distinct aircraft parameters that are recorded by flight data storage systems.
  2. Categorise recorded parameters into flight data (airborne), communication data, and ground-based operational data.
  3. Explain why each category of parameter (flight data, ATC data, meteorological data, check-in data, fire service data) is essential for post-incident investigation and flight safety.
  4. Evaluate, using a given scenario, which recorded parameters would be most critical for reconstructing an aircraft incident, and justify their reasoning.
  5. Compare the types of information stored by the cockpit voice recorder with those stored by the flight data recorder.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Talk for Learning: With the aid of audio-visuals, teacher makes a presentation to students about flight data storage.
Experiential Learning: Students visit the laboratory to observe a flight data recorder.
Talk for Learning: Teacher explains how the entire data in aircraft is stored, e.g., Airborne data from the pilots, Air Traffic Controller (ATC) data, meteorological data, check-in data, Airport Fire Service
