SHS2 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 2, Week 1
Aircraft Instrumentation
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.1 - Identify the salient features of flight data storage equipment, how data was previously stored and the importance of flight data storage.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least five salient features of a flight data recorder (black box) and explain the purpose of each feature.
- Describe how flight data was previously stored before the modern solid-state flight data recorder, including the limitations of those earlier systems.
- Explain at least three reasons why flight data storage is important for aviation safety, maintenance, and accident investigation.
- Compare and contrast modern digital storage methods (solid-state memory, cloud storage) with older analogue methods (magnetic tape, foil) used in aircraft.
- Justify, using strategic reasoning, why the black box is designed to survive extreme conditions such as impact, fire, and deep-water submersion.

Talk for Learning: With the aid of audio-visuals, teacher makes a presentation to students about flight data storage. Experiential Learning - Students visit the laboratory to observe a flight data recorder. - Teacher makes a demonstration on saving data on a flash drive, Google drive, iCloud; and explains how it is protected from hacking. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Pictures of a flight data recorder - iCloud - devices Assessment (2.2.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
