Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.2 - Explain the impact of the weather elements on flight.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain how temperature, pressure, wind, visibility and precipitation each affect the performance and safety of an aircraft during different phases of flight.
  2. Analyse a given weather scenario and predict its likely impact on a flight, justifying their reasoning with reference to weather elements.
  3. Distinguish between weather conditions that are manageable for pilots and those that require diversion, delay or cancellation of a flight.
  4. Evaluate the role of weather reports and forecasts in flight planning, using a real or simulated weather report for an airport in Ghana.
  5. Assess the impact of a specific weather hazard (for example, a thunderstorm or harmattan haze) on aircraft operations and recommend appropriate pilot actions.
