Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.1.LI.1 - Learners acquaint themselves with the Copyright Act of Ghana, 2005 (Act 690), Patent Act, 2003 (Act 657), Trademarks Act, 2004 (Act 664), Company Act, 2019 (Act 992) and their implications on art and design studio practices.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the name and year of enactment of the four key intellectual property and business laws that govern creative art practice in Ghana (Act 690, Act 657, Act 664, Act 992).
  2. Explain in their own words what each Act protects (copyright for creative works, patents for inventions, trademarks for brand identifiers, company registration for business entities) and give one example of an art or design output that falls under each.
  3. Identify at least two practical implications of each Act for an art and design studio practitioner, such as seeking permission before copying another artist’s work or registering a studio’s name.
  4. Work in mixed-ability groups to research one of the four Acts using available resources and present a brief summary of its key provisions and one implication for studio practice.
  5. Distinguish between copyright, patent, trademark, and company registration, and correctly match each to its corresponding Act and the type of creative output it protects.
