SHS1 Art And Design Studio · Semester 2, Week 7
Fabrication and Construction
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.2.2.LI.2 - Design and create 3D artworks using conventional and non-conventional materials, tools, and relevant processes to respond to societal problems.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- identify at least three societal problems in their immediate environment that can be addressed through 3D art and design works.
- generate and sketch a minimum of three annotated design ideas for a 3D artwork that responds to a chosen societal problem.
- construct a miniature 3D mixed-media artwork using at least two conventional materials and two non-conventional materials, applying an appropriate joining or forming process.
- explain in writing or orally the steps they followed in designing and creating their 3D artwork, justifying their material and process choices.
- evaluate their own and peers’ finished works using agreed criteria, giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Experiential Learning: Embark on an educational trip/Virtual field trips to workshops and studios, watch videos/photos etc. to explore how hand-building/hand-forming techniques such as weaving, carving, sewing, forging, metalsmithing, modelling, slabbing, coiling, throwing, construction, joinery etc. are used to create 3-D artworks Project-Based Learning: Develop multiple annotated drawings and sketches, maquettes, prototypes, etc. to be used as initial ideas for creating 3D art and design works in response to problems in society. Project-Based Learning: Create miniature 3D mix-media art or design works using conventional and non-conventional materials and viable tools and processes in a single artwork. Assessment (1.2.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: the Immediate environment; textbooks; web references; videos; flip charts,; posters; flyer; buntings; TLMs on proposal writing for 3D art-making processes and techniques in collage, sculpture, ceramics and pottery, weaving and basketry, macramé, assemblage and construction
