SHS1 Robotics · Semester 2, Week 13

Robot Construction

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.2.LI.1 - Sit in groups and create robots using robotic kits and/or local materials to build robots that address the problems of recognised global robotics challenges (e.g., the World Robotics Olympiad).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Calculate the gear ratio of a simple gear train and predict whether it increases speed or torque.
  2. Construct a compound gear system that changes the angle of rotation or direction of force in a moving mechanism.
  3. Build a simple vehicle that moves using either a single motor or two motors, and explain the difference in manoeuvrability.
  4. Create one functional robotic subsystem (walking machine, flapping wing, gripping figure, or lifting mechanism) using robotic kits or local materials.
  5. Present their group’s robot subsystem, explaining how their choice of gears and motors addresses a recognised global robotics challenge.

Sub-strand
Robot Construction (3.2)
Content standard
1.3.2.CS.2 - 1.3.2.CS.2 Demonstrate ability to create robots, vehicles, and other contraptions with moving parts. 1.3.2.LO.2 Create robots using fabricated robotic materials or local materials to implement basic mechanic operations.
Indicator
1.3.2.LI.1 - Sit in groups and create robots using robotic kits and/or local materials to build robots that address the problems of recognised global robotics challenges (e.g., the World Robotics Olympiad). They should make use of the following: Gears - Gear Ratios - Compound Gear Systems - Changing the angle of rotation using gears - Using worm gears Vehicles - Driving robots with single motors - Driving robots with two motors Moving Without Tires: Walking Machines Arms, Wings & Others - Flapping Wings - Gripping Figures - Lifting Mechanisms
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 13 (Week 33 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Talk for Learning: Discuss how the arrangement of small and large gears determines if the gear train will increase torque or speed and how different gear combinations can be used to change the direction of forces. Project-Based Learning: Work in teams to determine the gear ratio and output speed/torque of gear trains.

Experiential Learning: By giving use cases to problems that will require the use of gears for controlling seed, torque, timing and direction of forces, earners will work in groups to build fully functional robotic subsystems for the actuation of controls that satisfy conditions in the given use cases.

Assessment (1.3.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
