SHS1 Robotics · Semester 2, Week 4
Tools & Apps for Robot Design
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.2.2.LI.1 - Explore features of selected modelling, programming and simulation tools useful for the design of robots.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three categories of tools used in robot design: modelling tools, programming IDEs, and simulation platforms.
- Describe the main features of one modelling tool (for example, Tinkercad or Fusion 360) and one simulation tool (for example, VEXcode VR or CoppeliaSim).
- Match common robot design tasks (drawing a part, writing control code, testing a movement sequence) to the correct tool category.
- Work in mixed-ability groups to explore and demonstrate at least two features of an installed robot design tool on a computer.
- Reflect on the advantages of using virtual tools before building a physical robot, giving at least one reason why simulation saves time and money.

Experiential Learning: Guide learners in installing robot design, programming, and simulation tools. With the help of online learning tutorials, learners familiarise themselves with the features of these tools. Assessment (1.2.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
