SHS1 Robotics · Semester 1, Week 9

Robot Control Principles

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.2 - Evaluate the use of logic and loop diagrams and demonstrate their use in control systems’ design.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define a logic diagram and a loop diagram and state at least three standard symbols used in each.
  2. Read a given system narrative and identify the control components (sensor, controller, actuator, process) described within it.
  3. Draw a loop diagram to represent a given system narrative, correctly labelling each component and the direction of signal flow.
  4. Draw a logic diagram (ladder-style sequence) for a simple two-condition control scenario, such as a machine that starts only when two switches are both on.
  5. Evaluate the suitability of either a loop diagram or a logic diagram for a given control system scenario, justifying their choice with at least one valid reason.

Principles of Robotic Systems (Strand 1)
Sub-strand
Robot Control Principles (1.2)
Content standard
1.1.2.CS.2 - 1.1.2.CS.2 Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental control principles in automation and robotics. 1.1.2.LO.2 Classify feedback and non-feedback loop systems and demonstrate the use of logic and loop diagrams in control systems design.
Indicator
1.1.2.LI.2 - Evaluate the use of logic and loop diagrams and demonstrate their use in control systems' design.
Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 9 (Week 9 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Source document note

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:

  • content standard text - the page prints the content standard code as 1.1.2.CS.1, a code this sub-strand already uses for a different standard; filed as 1.1.2.CS.2

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Problem-Based Learning: Introduces learners to standard loop and logic diagram representations of components and how they are used in control systems' design. Learners draw loop and logic diagrams to represent given system narratives. Learners share drawings with the class for comments.

Assessment (1.1.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
