SHS3 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 10

Plane Geometry

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.1 - Explain the concept of auxiliary projection.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define auxiliary projection in their own words as a method of projecting a tilted or inclined surface onto a plane that is parallel to it, in order to show its true shape and size.
  2. Distinguish between a principal plane (front, top, side) and an auxiliary plane, and explain why auxiliary planes are needed when a surface is inclined to all principal planes.
  3. Identify objects or parts of objects (such as a sloping roof, a hopper, or a wedge) that require auxiliary projection to reveal their true shape.
  4. Use correct technical vocabulary (auxiliary plane, auxiliary elevation, auxiliary plan, true shape, reference line) when discussing drawings with peers.
  5. Justify, in a short written or verbal explanation, why an inclined face drawn on a principal plane appears foreshortened or distorted, and how auxiliary projection corrects this.

Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 10 (Week 10 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Initiating talk for learning and Research: Put learners in small groups of four (4) and with the use of charts, internet surf, pictures and YouTube videos engage them in a discussion to explain auxiliary projection. Ask the leaders to present their report in a whole class discussion.

Assessment (3.2.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
