SHS3 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 4

Object Manipulation in Drawing

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.2 - Use object manipulation techniques to create simple and complex designs as interventions for societal problems.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify a societal problem in their community that can be addressed through a designed object or product.
  2. Apply at least three object manipulation techniques (such as rotation, repetition, scaling, mirroring, or distortion) to develop both a simple and a complex design concept.
  3. Create a free-hand drawing of a design intervention that solves the identified societal problem, showing clear manipulation of an original natural or man-made object.
  4. Justify, in a short oral presentation, how their chosen object manipulation techniques make the design effective for its intended purpose.
  5. Work collaboratively in groups to compile a pictorial chart of at least five object-manipulated designs that serve as interventions for different societal challenges.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Collaborative/Group learning: In small groups, let learners identify and examine how simple/complex designs created by manipulating objects can be used as interventions for challenges in society.

Problems-Based Learning: In small groups, let learners generate a digital/manual pictorial table/chart of designs and objects created by manipulating objects that can be used as interventions for challenges in society.

Project-Based Learning: let learners work individually/in groups to use the available tools and techniques to create simple and complex designs as interventions for challenges in society using object manipulation techniques and freehand drawing.

Assessment (3.1.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
