SHS3 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 1
Concept Sketches
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.1.LI.1 - Experiment with freehand sketches to create designs in 3-point perspective with emphasis on proportions using basic shapes and rendering techniques.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the characteristics of 3-point perspective in given drawings and photographs, including the use of three vanishing points and the resulting bird’s-eye or worm’s-eye view.
- Demonstrate the ability to construct a freehand 3-point perspective sketch of a basic shape (cube or cuboid) with attention to correct proportion and placement of vanishing points.
- Apply at least two rendering techniques (hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, or tonal shading) to add depth and form to a 3-point perspective sketch.
- Create a simple complex form, such as a building, piece of furniture, or machine part, by combining basic shapes drawn in 3-point perspective.
- Articulate, through discussion and presentation, how proportions affect the realism and visual impact of a 3-point perspective drawing.
This lesson opens the topic of Concept Sketches. Learners arrive with prior knowledge of basic shapes, freehand drawing, and simple one-point and two-point perspective from earlier grades (B7 to B10). This lesson introduces the third vanishing point and moves learners toward the rendering and colour techniques scheduled for Semester 1, Week 2 (3.1.1.LI.2). The lesson stops at graphite pencil work only; colour pencil rendering is not introduced here.

Group Work/Collaborative Learning: Learners in groups discuss the characteristics of 3-point perspectives with emphasis on proportions, and how they can be used to create complex forms with the aid of relevant resources such as photographs, drawings, videos, charts and actual objects in the environment. Project-based Learning/Experiential Learning: Let learners in groups generate manual/digital pictorial charts of complex forms created using 3-point perspectives with emphasis on proportions. Project-based Learning: Let learners in groups/individuals experiment with relevant tools and techniques to create complex forms using 3-point perspectives with emphasis on proportions and freehand sketches. Assessment (3.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
