SHS2 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 2, Week 19
Garment Design Technology
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.3.LI.4 - Cut out the patterns to be used for the garment.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Recall and state at least five essential details that must be recorded on a garment pattern before cutting.
- Demonstrate correct use of pattern marking symbols (grain line, notches, fold line, dart, buttonhole placement) on their drafted basic blocks.
- Cut out pattern pieces accurately along the designated cutting lines, following the correct sequence for bodice, sleeve and skirt blocks.
- Apply proper care and maintenance procedures for prepared basic blocks, including safe storage in a made storage bag.
- Evaluate their own and peers’ cut-out patterns against a checklist of accuracy criteria, identifying errors and correcting them.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Collaborative and activity-based learning: 1. Let learners in their groups search for the details and other information that should be recorded or marked clearly on the pattern before cutting using internet surfing, relevant books, and videos. 2. Let the learners in their groups present their findings in a whole class discussion Project based activity, individual learning: 1. Guide the learners to record the details and other information that were found in their search on their patterns individually. The details and other information should be clearly marked. 2. Learners go round to see what their colleagues have done Project based activity, group work: Assist learners in groups to cut their basic blocks to correspond with the various pattern marking symbols Individual learning: Guide learners on how to care and maintain the basic blocks they have prepared in order to keep them safe. Learners design and make a bag for storage. Project based activity, individual learning: Help learners to cut out the pattern pieces very carefully and cut as many parts as required to make the cloth into garment. Mark all pattern details on the right side of the pattern. Assessment (2.3.3.AS.4). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
